Suede at The Hospital Club review: Giving it class, living it fast tonight
Published Friday, Mar 8 2013, 11:09 GMT | By Mayer Nissim

Suede play The Hospital Club in London
Some people who have already done all that growing and learning are Suede, and they saunter on to the tiny basement stage with all the confidence of a band who absolutely know that their comeback album is something of a stormer.
Five of the nine tracks played tonight are from Bloodsports and there's no greater compliment than saying that they nestle alongside the rest of the material with ease.
A couple of Suede moments that might edge towards self-parody on record ('Hit Me' and 'Filmstar') make complete sense when the band fling themselves into them unselfconsciously on stage. Brett Anderson's energy and attitude makes a complete mockery of his 45 years.
Ah yes, mockery. From their floppyhaired beginnings and ridiculous interviews, Suede have always been adamant that ridicule is nothing to be scared of - and that's their greatest virtue. When the band storm through 'So Young' you almost start to chuckle about these middle-aged men playing a song about being young, gone and smoking heroin. But their enduring energy and belief makes that impossible.
Similarly, when Brett gives a quickfire Agincourt V and single-finger bird-flip straight down the barrel of a camera when singing "now you're over 21" in 'Animal Nitrate' it'd be oh-so easy to laugh, but with that swagger you can't help but be completely won over.

The full Suede setlist was as follows:
'Barriers'
'Hit Me'
'Filmstar'
'Animal Nitrate'
'For The Strangers'
'It Starts and Ends With You'
'Sabotage'
'So Young'
'Metal Mickey'

Barclaycard Mercury Prize Sessions return with gigs from Johnny Marr, Tom Odell, Bastille and Laura Mvula
By Steve Stubbs
Wednesday, 13 March 2013
The Barclaycard Mercury Prize Sessions gig series returned to The Hospital Club in London last Thursday (7 March) with stunning performances from Suede and Palma Violets. The live music will continue over the coming weeks with Johnny Marr, Tom Odell, Bastille and Laura Mvula all set to take to the Sessions stage:
The legendary Suede kicked off the new run of Sessions, sharing the bill with indie hot property Palma Violets, whose powerful performance featured tracks from their recently released debut album, ‘180’. Suede’s stage presence was as strong as ever as they treated the crowd to classic tracks, including Animal Nitrate, alongside new material from their forthcoming album, ‘Bloodsports’, which is out later this month.
The Sessions are an exclusive series of gigs that the Barclaycard Mercury Prize has established to celebrate live music in the UK and are separate from the Barclaycard Mercury Prize ‘Albums of the Year’. Featuring a range of new and established artists from both the UK and overseas, the Sessions are filmed in front of an audience of around 250 music fans at The Hospital Club in Covent Garden. Tickets to the events are available to music fans through competitions. More details can be found at www.mercuryprize.com.
Fans who are not able to attend the gigs will be able to watch tracks from the Sessions on television and online, as each featured artist will be the subject of a dedicated programme to be broadcast on Channel 4.
Further tracks will be available to watch online at - www.mercuryprize.com/sessions.
