New music: Suede – Barriers
A new Suede single! That sounds like Simple Minds! And has no daft lyrics!

Suede are back! With new material and everything! More than a decade since 2002's A New Morning – a record so tired-sounding Brett Anderson broke up the band – Suede have announced a brand new album, Bloodsports. While the first single, It Starts and Ends with You, will be released in February, the band have given away a new song as a free download.

"Barriers isn't the first single but we are proud of it enough just to chuck it out there and thought that its pulsing, romantic swell somehow summed up the feel of the album quite nicely," Anderson said. He's right – all the post-1994 Suede attributes are there: big sweeping guitars, lyrics about "lipstick traces", echo-laden vocals that sound slightly muddled amid all the lashings of Epic. Unfortunately there's nothing as glaringly daft as Savoir Faire's opening line "She live in a house, she stupid as a mouse", but you can't have it all.

Suede Unveil First New Material In 10 Years - Listen Now
Monday, 07 January 2013
Written by Jon Stickler

Suede have announced they will release a brand new studio album, ‘Bloodsports’, in March 2013. This will be preceded by the single ‘It Starts And Ends With You’ in February. Tracklisting, details of a deluxe direct to fan edition and the exact release date will be announced shortly.
To help fans with the wait, a key track from the album, ‘Barriers’, is available as a free download via the band’s site http://www.suede.co.uk
'Bloodsports’ will be the group’s sixth studio album and their first since 2002. Brett Anderson says: “After a year of sweating and bleeding over the record it's finally finished so we wanted to get some music out there as soon as we could. ‘Barriers’ isn't the first single but we are proud of it enough just to chuck it out there and thought that it's pulsing, romantic swell somehow summed up the feel of the album quite nicely. The album is called Bloodsports. It's about lust, it's about the chase, it's about the endless carnal game of love. It was possibly the hardest we've ever made but certainly the most satisfying. It's ten furious songs for me have reclaimed from ourselves what Suede was always about; drama, melody and noise."
Suede are set to play a one-off show at London’s Alexandra Palace on Saturday March 30th 2013. This gig follows a series of shows since their reformation, including appearances at venues including The O2, Brixton Academy and the Royal Albert Hall.

Suede UK & Ireland Tour Dates are as follows:

Download Suede's 'Pulsating, Romantic' Return to Form: 'Barriers'
January 7 2013, 3:51 PM ET
by Kyle McGovern

First album in 10 years, 'Bloodsports,' due in March

Britpop progenitors Suede will return in March with Bloodsports, their first new album in more than 10 years, and to mark the occasion, the London five-piece have offered fans a free download of "Barriers," a song off the upcoming LP. The nearly four-minute track towers with an arena-ready, heart-swelling chorus, lined by a brittle but piercing guitar melody, and overflows with melodramatic lyrics depicting lipstick traces, a world wrapped in tinsel, and invitations and fountain pens.
Despite being the first taste of Suede's sixth record, "Barriers" won't be the first official single from Bloodsports, according to frontman Brett Anderson. "After a year of sweating and bleeding over the record it's finally finished so we wanted to get some music out there as soon as we could," Anderson told the NME. "'Barriers' isn't the first single but we are proud enough of it to just chuck it out there and thought that its pulsing, romantic swell somehow summed up the feel of the album quite nicely." The first single from the 10-track collection will be "It Starts and Ends With You," scheduled for February.
Anderson went on to describe the follow-up to Suede's 2002 LP, A New Morning, saying, "It's about lust, it's about the chase, it's about the endless carnal game of love. It was possibly the hardest we ever made but certainly is the most satisfying. It's ten furious song[s] [that] have reclaimed for me what Suede was always about: drama, melody and noise."
In a September interview with The Quietus, Anderson said, "Without wishing to be facetious, it sounds like Suede." He added, "We're not trying to reinvent the sound of the band, that'd be a disastrous thing to do. I think that's possibly where we went wrong on the last two albums," referring to the mixed reception to A New Morning and its 1999 predecessor, Head Music. The English singer said that the group's first album since reuniting in 2010 resembles parts of 1994's Dog Man Star and 1996's Coming Up. Judge for yourself by streaming "Barriers" below (via Consequence of Sound) or downloading it for free through Suede's website.

Suede: 'Barriers' - Single review
Released on Monday, Jan 7 2013
By Mayer Nissim

It's either absurdly appropriate or the worst sort of bad luck that Suede release their comeback track a day before their major influence, touchstone and inevitable point of comparison David Bowie drops his. Suede's last album - the forgettable A New Morning - actually came out a year before Bowie's presumed swansong Reality, but side projects, solo work, and two years of gigging means that the release of this free download has none of the shock factor of the Dame's return.
Which is a little bit of a shame, because in its own small way the euphoric 'Barriers' is a much more triumphant comeback. A mix of hooky guitars and pounding bass that recalls the Manics circa-2002 (so more than a little bit like U2), nicely-oblique lyrics that reference Greil Marcus ("Aniseed kisses and lipstick traces") and Brett Anderson's classic shouty/soaring vocals all over the chorus make this easily the best bit of music Suede have recorded since 'Everything Will Flow' way back in 1999. It doesn't quite reach the dizzy, short-lived heights of Anderson's reunion with Bernard Butler as The Tears, but much to our surprise it's really not far off at all.

Suede - Barriers
Comeback track gains visuals...
Robin Murray /

So Suede are back.
In a way, it simply reminds us how much we've missed them. That sense of androgynous glamour, that sense of harking back to Britain's furious art-rock lineage are all sadly absent from the current music scene.
And of course, 'Barriers' sounds exactly as it should. Suede in 2013 are an older, refined entity - that arch touch is still there, with Brett Anderson's lyrics losing none of their potency. Released as a free download, 'Barriers' has now gained the visual treatment.
Here's a quote from Brett Anderson about the song: “After a year of sweating and bleeding over the record it's finally finished so we wanted to get some music out there as soon as we could. ‘Barriers’ isn't the first single but we are proud of it enough just to chuck it out there and thought that it's pulsing, romantic swell somehow summed up the feel of the album quite nicely . The album is called Bloodsports. It's about lust, it's about the chase, it's about the endless carnal game of love. It was possibly the hardest we've ever made but certainly the most satisfying. It's ten furious songs for me have reclaimed from ourselves what Suede was always about; drama, melody and noise.”

Watch it now.

Glam Rock Albums
By Tom Hawking on Jan 11, 2013
1 of 10

We’re super excited about the return of Suede, both because their new single “Barriers” is really great and because, honestly, we’re hoping for some sort of glam re-revival in the year to come — surely it’s time for the return of bands whose ambitions extend beyond bedroom laptoptronica and/or determinedly anonymous we-just-do-what-we-do-and-possibly-have-beards indie? Hey, David Bowie’s surprise album announcement certainly can’t hurt the possibility of a glitter resurgence, either! While we wait, we’ve been digging out our old Suede CDs and also exhuming other examples of glam rock from after the genre’s mid-’70s golden age. Here are some of our favorites — what are yours?

Suede — Dog Man Star
There’s an argument to be made for the first Suede record here, but we’re going with the majestically overblown glory of their enduring masterpiece. In essence, glam has always been about creating a world to transcend urban drudgery, about looking for “constellations in the mould in the coffee cup,” in bassist Mat Osman’s Oscar Wilde-esque phrase. Dog Man Star did that and then some, creating an entire universe of dissipated glamor in the living room of Brett Anderson’s basement apartment.
