Review: Suede @ Manchester Academy
1 Nov 2013 12:12
Brett and co drown out natterers with hit show
Suede
***
Quite why people would want to spend £26.50 to attend a concert and then spend most of it chattering loudly is beyond me.
But at Suede's sold-out Manchester Academy gig that was the situation - with most of the audience in rapt attention to the music of the indie rockers, while a noisy minority seemed intent on nattering their heads off.
Fine when Brett Anderson and co romped through the band's jangling hits like Animal Nitrate, Trash and Film Star to drown out those rude ones.
Not so fine when Brett is tenderly performing some of Suede's haunting melodies like The 2 Of Us.
"I wish people would have the courtesy to shut up when I'm singing a song," Brett snaps, to rapturous applause and cheers from those of us here to watch a band back to peak powers after that 2010 comeback.
For the fan faithful there are plenty of treats in this set - with Brett never giving less than his all with the sweat dripping from that fabulous flopping fringe and soaking his tight white shirt by the end of this set. Special mention to the show's haunting opener of Still Life, many a fan's album track favourite, and performed in acoustic splendour - before those noisy natterers kicked in.
Anderson's stage presence, with hip-jerks, bouncing and almost erotic dancing to Killing of a Flashboy, is still as powerful as when they burst onto the Britpop scene back in the early 90s.
Sure, there's a few sound issues in this cavernous Academy setting, and it's never going to be as special as the last time they played in the city, their spine-tingling comeback at The Ritz in 2010.
But playing out with crowd-pleasing belters Beautiful Ones and New Generation means no-one at the Academy - presumably even those chatting - can have left feeling short-changed.
