Brett Anderson struggles to enjoy Suede's finest hour
Posted: Wednesday 22 Jan 2014
Rocker BRETT ANDERSON can't bear to listen to his band SUEDE's classic album DOG MAN STAR as it reminds him of the painful split from his songwriting partner BERNARD BUTLER.
The pair formed the band in the late 1980s and found fame in the early 1990s, but they split in 1994 when Butler walked out of a recording session following months of tension between the two.
The band was midway through recording what would become their critically-acclaimed masterpiece Dog Man Star, but the acrimonious bust-up with Butler has left Anderson with negative memories of the record.
He tells NME magazine, "Although I'm very proud of it, Dog Man Star is a hard album for me to listen to without being reminded of the bleak period in our career that spawned it. My relationship with Bernard was disintegrating and it culminated in him leaving the band. I'll always remember watching Bernard playing (a) beautiful piano part from the control room and feeling this strange mixture of pride and trepidation."
