Suede's Brett Anderson: 'Britpop was the last time guitar music was a real force'
By Nadia Khomami
Suede frontman Brett Anderson has spoken about Suede's place in Britpop, stating that the movement was "the last time guitar music was a real force".
In an interview with NME about receiving the Godlike Genius Award at the NME Awards 2015 with Austin, Texas, the singer discussed the value of Britpop and why it is so popular. "I think people are still really fascinated in Britpop, because you look at it culturally, and it was still the last big movement in guitar music. It was the last time guitar music was a real force," Anderson said. "Obviously there's been individual bands that have come through since Britpop, and they've been fantastic, and they've caused their own little storms in their own worlds – or big storms, perhaps – but Britpop was the last big movement."
Anderson also spoke about Suede's reformation and their last album, 2013's 'Bloodsports'."I felt, before we reformed, that we’d gone off the radar a bit. And when we got back together we reminded people of what we did really well," he said. "I think there was a real re-evaulation of Suede as an artistic force. And with ‘Bloodsports’, we tried to make it compete with our best ever work."
He continued: "It’s very hard doing a comeback album when you haven’t made an LP for 10 years, because you can’t reinvent yourself - you have to look at what you’ve done best and solidify that. But it sent out a statement that we can still make great music."
Suede will pick up the Godlike Genius Award in person and also perform live at the NME Awards 2015 with Austin, Texas on February 18 at O2 Academy, Brixton, London. Previous winners of the award include Blondie, The Clash, Paul Weller, The Cure, Manic Street Preachers, New Order & Joy Division, Dave Grohl, Noel Gallagher and Johnny Marr.
In addition to the announcement that Suede will receive this year's Godlike Genius Award it is also confirmed that Charli XCX will perform live on the night and that Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens will return to host the show for the second year in a row. Stephens made his debut in 2014.
Charli XCX joins a list of performers at the NME Awards with Austin, Texas that already includes Run The Jewels, The Vaccines and Royal Blood.
The NME Awards with Austin, Texas take place at the O2 Academy Brixton, London, on February 18, with tickets available now.
Last year's big winners included Arctic Monkeys, Paul McCartney and Damon Albarn.
The line-up for the NME Awards Tour 2015 with Austin, Texas has already been confirmed. In February Palma Violets, Fat White Family, The Amazing Snakeheads and Slaves will tour the UK. It kicks off on February 19 and tickets are available now.
