Re: Suedeness

Ha! I recently noticed that Suede records are popping up in the dollar bins of the used stores around here...almost frustrates me, in various ways.

Re: How did you get into Suede?

Oh, definitely! Usually I try to listen to bands without the lyric sheet for a while, but with the Manics, I turned to the booklet from the first few bars.

...but once you know the words, it's almost amazing how easy it is to hear them when you know what the "right" words are.

Re: How did you get into Suede?

...not that I don't love the Manics, mind you, just telling it like it is. :D

Re: How did you get into Suede?

See, I put the Manics in the same category as the Cocteaus; at least with Suede, one gets the sense that the words are being sung in a documented language.

Re: How did you get into Suede?

Ah, misheard lyrics...I'm guessing Suede would be one of the best bands for that, no? Unless you count, say, the Cocteau Twins...

Re: Suede beat Elastica in Britpop world cup

Blur's ok enough...but the first three (yes, three) Oasis albums are where it's at. Throw in The Masterplan and you have a streak to rival the first four Suede albums.

Re: So what exactly are "sixteen hole boots"?

Haha, that's what I figured, but there's nothing that explicitly spells it out, so it could have been any number of perverse (?) things.

Re: Suede beat Elastica in Britpop world cup

I don't get the Cast hate. Yeah, they have the virtuosity of Eater and painfully sappy lyrics, but All Change is such a fun album! I actually think it's more consistant than Parklife or Definitely Maybe. Elastica just rubs me the wrong way...there's no passion at all in it, just some noisy guitars a...

So what exactly are "sixteen hole boots"?

And while we're on the subject of lyrics, what's "have you ever tried it that way" refer to?

Re: How did you get into Suede?

So Young was the first hit for me...until I found the EssentialSuede site, I had no idea what Brett was singing in the intro. I thought it went something like "Speak up...stop...to walk out...she walks." That first listen of the debut album is one of my favorite musical memories; walking a...

Suede > Cast > Menswear > Elastica (imvho).

I know! It's awful...and then you end up wondering: did the hype kill the excitement, or do I just have really odd taste in music?

Re: How did you get into Suede?

...there was a time when I read music criticism online. That was when I was unconcerned about being terminally boring and having nothing even resembling a life or a personality. I read reviews on RateYourMuisic and Allmusic and Amazon and other sites for no particular reason. Oh right, back to Suede...

A New Morning lovers of the world, unite!

Ok, it's my least favorite of their releases (unless you count disc 2 of Sci-Fi Lullabies). Brett's voice is sort of strained (in a painful way), and they buried two of the best songs as "hidden" or "bonus" tracks. Positivity isn't the terrible song that people make it out to be,...
