Brett Anderson reveals Suede are working on a new album

Post by sunshine »

Frontman says the group's last album 'Bloodsports' proves they are still relevant
Brett Anderson has revealed that Suede are working on a new album. Speaking to NME at the launch of the Teenage Cancer Trust's annual series of gigs, he said that they are currently working on a follow-up to 2013's 'Bloodsports'. "We're busy writing at the moment," he said. "I'm very proud of 'Bloodsports', and the best thing about it is that it showed us that we can write new music, and relevant new music."
He added: "We want to carry on writing and pushing forward, so we're taking it somewhere else now. I think it'll be out next year, as we’re just writing at the moment so realistically it will be next year."
Suede will close the Teenage Cancer Trust's annual series of gigs on Saturday March 30. They will play their second album 'Dog Man Star' in its entirety to mark the 20th anniversary of its release. Suede last performed for the charity in 2010, their first show after a lengthy hiatus. "That was our comeback show," said Anderson. "We hadn't played for seven or eight years and as a result it was a very emotional night. The Albert Hall is a very special venue too, I've got a lot of great memories of that place from down the years. Lots of elements like that made for an amazing show and if I had to choose my favourite show from 25 years of playing live it would be that one.
"I remember coming off stage and seeing [organiser] Roger Daltrey. I asked him what he thought and he said 'It was great. A bit loud though.' So if Roger Daltrey is saying a show was loud that's quite an achievement. This time we're doing 'Dog Man Star' and part of the reason is the 20th anniversary, another part is that the 2010 show was so good we shouldn't try to top it by doing the same thing again."
Talking of 'Dog Man Star', Suede's second album and final recording with their guitarist Bernard Butler, Anderson said it didn't feel 20 years old, adding: "I've become objective about it, where once, when we released it, I was subjective. You don't see an album with any perspective when you release it, but I suppose if 20 years later you still thought a record that's actually shit was very good then there'd be something slightly crazy about you." "It's hard for me to listen to in places because it does remind me of fights we were having, but it's a beautiful record, dramatic and heartfelt. There should be more drama and emotion in music, that's definitely lacking. And turbulence in a band is an important element, it can be a creative thing."
He also ruled out Bernard Butler's return for the live show, saying: "I don't think he wants to come back. He's happy doing what he's doing."

Suede to release new album in 2015
Band's 2013 album, Bloodsports, gave them inspiration 'to carry on writing and pushing forward', says frontman Brett Anderson
Suede have started work on a follow-up to 2013's Bloodsports, according to frontman Brett Anderson. Speaking to NME, the singer said the release of their last album was a creative catalyst. "We're busy writing at the moment," he said. "I'm very proud of Bloodsports, and the best thing about it is that it showed us that we can write new music, and relevant new music."
He continued: "We want to carry on writing and pushing forward, so we're taking it somewhere else now … we’re just writing at the moment so realistically it will be next year."
Bloodsports, described by the Guardian as a "rare comeback album that makes you want to return to the old records so you can carry on listening", was the band's sixth studio album. "It needed to sound like a band, but it couldn't possibly sound like self-parody," Anderson told the Quietus in 2013. "That's why we discarded so many songs, it was like a new band starting over – you don't hear half their new songs when they first get together. We needed to have this brutal sense of what or wasn't good enough."
But the band aren't quite ready to leave their past behind entirely. This year marks the 20th anniversary of their second album and, to mark the occasion, Suede will play Dog Man Star in its entirety as part of the Teenage Cancer Trust series on 30 March, their first appearance at the event since 2010.
Dog Man Star was Suede's final recording with guitarist Bernard Butler. "It's hard for me to listen to in places because it does remind me of fights we were having, but it's a beautiful record, dramatic and heartfelt,” Anderson told NME. “There should be more drama and emotion in music, that's definitely lacking. And turbulence in a band is an important element, it can be a creative thing."

Bloodsports II, Anderson Returns: New Suede album coming in 2015
Kayley Kravitz
After roughly a decade away, last year saw the rather unlikely return of Britpop kickstarters Suede. The release of Bloodsports — the band’s first release since the much-maligned A New Morning in 2002 — was met with praise from critics and fans, and seemed to reclaim the band’s mid-’90s magic for grand balladry and glam-tinged rock and roll.
As the year progressed, the band toured extensively, though not in the United States (hey guys, we’re really sorry your gear was stolen in Boston in 1997 but we’re begging you to come back as these annual pilgrimages to England aren’t cheap). And the world was treated to re-releases of all of Suede’s studio albums on 180 gram in a deluxe box set.
Clearly, Suede’s triumphant return was enough to get the band’s creative juices flowing once again.
Perfectly-cheekboned keyboard player Neil Codling tweeted in March that the band had returned to the studio to record Bloodsports‘ follow-up.
Yesterday, Codling broke hearts when he announced he would not be joining his other band, the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, on their upcoming Japanese tour. Instead, he’s tied up working on the next Suede release.
The Guardian reports that the next Suede record is due out in 2015. In the meantime, here’s hoping it’s even half as good as Bloodsports.
