I should have posted this in Off-topic under the title "Prove that you have no personality." Oh well.

I guess I tend to enjoy the glammy side of Suede more than the slow ballads (though I love The Living Dead and Oceans...huh).

I don't like the tune...that's really not something I can explain why, just that some sequences of notes do it for me and some don't...and if I don't like a melody, it's hard for me to find a reason to like a song.

The words aren't bad, but I just can't find any way to relate to them. Compare that with Pantomime Horse, where every line bites and has an undercurrent of lived tragedy. The lyrics are equally universal/vague, but with Pantomime Horse, I get the feeling that there's a genuine, honest story being told...with The Next Life, it just doesn't feel real to me.

Please note that I'm not denying that the song was inspired by something real or that it's noble in what it tries to say..."The Rising" is as well (Bruce Springsteen's album "about" 9/11/2001), but that doesn't make it great art.

As a concession, I do like the falsetto, wordless part...but it's too little, too late.

Funny, the Suede Parade results as of today have no mention of it:

Favourite song (overall)
1. The Asphalt World 43
2. The Wild Ones 26
3. Still Life 22
4. Europe Is Our Playground 19
5. Animal Nitrate 17

Best song lyrics
1. The Wild Ones 30
2. The Asphalt World 27
3. The 2 Of Us 26
4. The Living Dead 25
5. By The Sea 17

Best song music
1. Animal Nitrate 43
2. The Asphalt World 41
3. Still Life 30
4. Beautiful Ones 21
5. The Wild Ones 20

...and if we're going to bring popularity into it, we might as well conclude that Britney Spears is greater than Suede, because she's sold more records and, extrapolating from that, has more fans.

And neither do yours, which the point I was trying to make. History has held that the Beatles are better than your beloved Stones...but hell, I'll be damned if I say that's a reason why you should like the Beatles more than the Stones.

mark wrote: the bizarre thing is you compare the lyrics in The Next Life with Pantmime Horse (a mistake to start with because although everyone does it I hate people who compare songs - even songs by the same band because every song is individual and a work in its own right - comparing The Next Life with Pantomime Horse is like comparing a ball point pen with a banana - they are two completely different things...) and strangely whilst the lyrics in The Nrext Life are heartfelt, sincere, open, honest and based in reality of thought, the lyrics in Pantomime Horse are poetic nonsense - beautiful poetic nonsense I give you that but nonsense all the same...
The reason I brought up PH is because I thought it was good example of an emotional lyric...no other reason. I wasn't saying "The Next Life sucks because it's not Pantomime Horse"...not at all!!!

See, I don't think PH is nonsense...differing points of view, I suppose. There's a definite story in there, two real people, among the circus imagery and the odd juxtapositions. When I listen to the song, I really get the sense that there's this guy who had this really, um, abusive relationship with this other person, and I feel for him, even through his self-pity. "Did you ever go round with them?" Well, no, but the fact that he's asking that question (and so wonderfully in the musical context of the song) says something to me; it helps bring that pain to life.

...and The Next Life has none of that, at least for me. If it was a thrilling (but relatively empty) song like, say, "Animal Lover," I wouldn't care...but The Next Life really succeeds or fails based on its lyricism and musical pathos, and I just don't get any sense of something emotional to latch onto. You do. That's fine. I'm not telling you you're an idiot for loving it.
