Pretenders and Suede will combine for a co-headline show in London this autumn to raise money for Brand Aid.

The bands will play their final shows of 2019 at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire on November 20, coming together to raise funds for their crew member John Brandham, who recently suffered a stroke and is unlikely to be able to work for the foreseeable future. Chrissie Hynde said:

"We are delighted to be playing this unexpected end of the year show with Suede in aid of our dear pal John Brandham, most trusted friend and deluxe crew member. John suffered a medical setback recently and will therefore be sadly missed during our 2020 tours – but to see him through in the mean-time, we’re doing the mother of all benefits. Should be a great night!"

Each band will perform a full set, with tickets for the concert on general sale at 9am on October 18. All net proceeds for the show will go to Brandham for his ongoing care.

The Pretenders and Suede to co-headline intimate London benefit show
Nick Reilly

The Pretenders and Suede are to join forces next month for a co-headline show at London’s O2 Shepherds Bush Empire.
The ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’ rockers will team up with Brett Anderson and co to raise funds for their mutual crew member and cohort John Brandham on November 20, after he unexpectedly suffered a stroke. Tickets will go on sale from Friday October 18 at 9am and you can buy them here.
“We are delighted to be playing this unexpected end of the year show with Suede in aid of our dear pal John Brandham, most trusted friend and deluxe crew member,” said The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde. “John suffered a medical setback recently and will therefore be sadly missed during our 2020 tours – but to see him through in the mean-time, we’re doing the mother of all benefits. Should be a great night!”
Speaking of John in his recent memoir ‘Afternoon With The Blinds Drawn’, Brett Anderson said: “I bought a car and met John and we got on like the proverbial blazing house. He is the perfect person with whom to spend long journeys; he is kind and respectful and very funny, possessing a bone-dry, self-deprecating Tottenham fan’s wit and the flattened, drawling vowels of a broad Estuary accent.
“He’s the sort of person about whom no one has a bad word despite the fact that in public on more than one occasion he’s been mistaken for Ronnie Wood. He has such an air of peaceful serenity that if it were suddenly announced on the News that Jesus had returned to earth in the form of a Spurs fan from Luton I wouldn’t be in the least bit surprised.”
Last week, Anderson admitted that he hated Britpop in the 90s and he tried to distance the band from it.
“I disassociated myself from that very early on, as soon as I saw what I saw as becoming this kind of laddish, jingoistic, cartoon happening, which became Britpop, I very quickly distanced Suede from that,” said Anderson.
When asked if it made the band look snobby, Anderson added: “I think did it make us look snobby? Probably, you know, you make lots of mistakes along the way, I’m not perfect you know what I mean? But all you do, you just go with your instincts, and I saw what was happening with Britpop and for me, it felt quite distasteful. It felt nationalistic, it felt like there was, sort of, quite a strong thread of misogyny and I didn’t think Suede should be part of that.”

Suede and The Pretenders live in London: A night of fire, passion and
Nov 21, 2019
London, O2 Shepherds Bush Empire, November 20 2019
It’s not every night you get to see two artists who have both, in their own ways, subverted expectations and fought against the predictable narrative of rock’n’roll self-destruction. But last night Suede and The Pretenders did just that, joining together to raise money for crew member and friend John Brandham, who recently had a stroke.
First up is The Pretenders, who emerge from the O2 Shepherds Bush Empire’s darkness with Chrissie Hynde exuding a near-superhuman level of cool.
What’s immediately striking is how impeccably tight The Pretenders’ current line-up is, the most notable of which being frenetic guitarist James Walbourne and original drummer Martin Chambers. Though their set traverses numerous decades, there’s a consistency of style and high standard of material that never lets up, the band smoothly transitioning from the newer pounding snarl of ‘Gotta Wait’ right back to their emotive version of The Kinks’ ‘Stop Your Sobbing’. The punk pop of ‘Back on the Chain Gang’ still sounds as fresh as it did in 1982, while the mesmeric lull of ‘I Go To Sleep’ – a special request tonight from Brandham – enraptures the crowd.
The most absorbing element though remains Hynde herself. Sporting a specially-made ‘Brandaid’ t-shirt, while her indomitable vocals soar with a majesty that hasn’t waned.
As Suede make their suitably dramatic appearance, a realisation occurs; even the most ardent fans of the Britpop pioneers couldn’t have foreseen the flowering of their creative renaissance over the last decade. Their hat trick of post-comeback albums has seen a band that many once considered spent again penning exhilarating music.
Suede’s presence on the touring and festival circuit over the last ten years has seen their fanbase swell further and Suede’s fan club – ‘The Insatiable Ones’ – are out in force tonight. They launch headfirst into a brand new, raucous number entitled ‘White Boy on a Stage’ – a confident statement from a band firmly keeping their sights fixed forwards.
Like The Pretenders, Suede’s set veers from recent material to those beloved 1990s crowdpleasers. In the context of the band’s second life, ‘So Young”s appeal to hedonism and youthful abandon sounds like a vital manifesto, while the stinging intensity of ‘Animal Nitrate’ has lost none of its bite in the past 26 years.
Brett Anderson continues to prowl the stage with an unrivalled vigour. At times he appears to be a man half his 52 years, exhibiting a Jagger-esque disregard for the march of time. Anderson not so much performs Suede’s set but inhabits every lyric, melody and rhythm.
In an era of ever-disposable media, it’s inspiring to witness these culturally-affecting, game-changing musicians up close. Though their respective fires may have first been lit decades previously, they show no signs of burning out. Andy Price

Ah good, glad you were there. One of these days I might make the effort to queue up with you guys. Great gig anyway, didn’t think I’d get to see them this year so a bonus for me, just a shame it was for unfortunate reasons.
