Compared to the rest of the population. Just wondering.


Evidence:

A: The album covers. Normally, you get a cutesy pic of the band, or maybe some "arty" design (any given Pink Floyd cover). With Suede, we get women kissing, a dude's bum, a guy on a bed prepared to receive "attention" from two people of undetermined genders, etc.

B: The lyrics. Most pop songs are along the lines of "We're in love, yay" or "My woman done left me" or "I'm walking this lonesome highway, man, and the bottle's the only friend I have" or "Drugs are groovy, man!" With Suede, we get women who get off on their mates beating them up, men who think of women as highly addictive drugs, a world in which people would rather shoot up than shag, and the world is awash with inflatable dolls and racy films and pigs.

C: The fans. We actually love this stuff. Are we sickies, or do we just enjoy the glimpse into this alternate world? Or is it simply not "sick" at all, and rather more natural than the sanitized "Duh, gotta punch the clock and go home and watch American Idol and open a cold one" life we're expected to have?

As for Suede I like their songs because they are dark, poetic, edgy, grand, epic, poppy, punky, trashy, cool, rocky, fun, sad, beautiful, heartbreaking...

You left out sleazy and titilating (in a perverted sort of way).
