Suede tease new era with live video of punky new song ‘Antidepressants’
Filmed at London’s Alexandra Palace Park last summer as part of their co-headline tour with Manic Street Preachers, ‘Antidepressants’ marks the band’s first new material since their acclaimed 2022 album ‘Autofiction‘ – and leans further into the record’s punky and propulsive energy.
With a gothic, post-punk soul featuring the dark shades of Gang Of Four, The Cure and Siouxsie And The Banshees and Blondie‘s shameless pop heart, the song retains Suede’s indie-noir majesty as frontman Brett Anderson conjures up youthful garage rock exuberance for “teenage tribes in the bathroom again” and “singing a song while I’m happy“.
The band have teased that their 10th album will see them continue on the “daring” and lively path they’ve wondered since their 2013 comeback and on the NME Godlike Genius’ self-proclaimed “angry, nasty, punk record” in ‘Autofiction’.
“The next record that we’re planning to write, and have already started, is much more experimental,” Anderson told NME back in 2022. “I don’t really know if there’s an arc with [‘Autofiction’]. I’m not seeing it as a selection of albums. You just have to do it one at a time, really. I do think of those three records as [being] together, especially ‘Night Thoughts’ and ‘The Blue Hour’, but the next record will be completely different.”
He added: “I’d love to think that our most daring work is ahead of us. That’s a really exciting prospect – that a band at our stage of our career haven’t just settled for running through the motions. I love making new records: it makes my heart beat faster, it’s what I get up for in the morning.”
